Welcome to the February 2006 issue of "MichRoFitted." We hope you had a great President’s Day weekend and were able to enjoy it, even with the mixed bag weather we had.
MichRoFit has had an exciting couple of months; we're celebrating new Club records garnered at the Los Gatos All-Comers and first-time participation at the Pole Vault Summit; we're welcoming new members to VasbySF Track Club, plus our new regulars at the MichRoFit Circuits! We thank you for your continued support. The referral program for our Circuit sessions has been well-received and we are honored to know that you, our clients and members, feel and believe that our programs are well-worth recommending to friends and family!
Feel free to forward this newsletter to others, as well.
To your health,
MichRoFit Private Gym
 |
The MichRoFit Gym opened its doors to clients in December 2005 for private and semi-private personal training sessions. In addition to the outdoor training sessions favored by many of our clients, the option to take your training programs indoors is now available as well.
The gym is a great addition to the many facets of MichRoFit’s programs.
Gym sessions are by appointment only. Please contact us at MichRoFit for more information about personal training services and get started on a workout program designed especially for you. |
The Gift of Fitness
 |
MichRoFit gift packages make gift-giving easy. And what could be better than giving the gift of health? MichRoFit creates custom 'gift packages' tailored to your special fitness buff (or wanting-to-be-a-fitness-buff).
Give that special someone a gift certificate for personal training sessions/group classes or a combination of both; fitness wear and fitness gadgets personally tried and tested by MichRoFit trainers and members; or a mixed bag of goodies that are sure to motivate. We create gift packages that you will be proud and excited to give. Every package is designed exclusively for the lucky recipient.

Member Spotlight: Leila
 |
VasbySF Track Club is proud to cast the spotlight on one of our most hard-working athletes - and not just in track and field.
Leila was born in November 1981 in Sidney, Montana. Even as a youngster, it was obvious that she would be a go-getter and become one of the most well-rounded individuals we know. Sports-wise, little Leila was in AAU & USA Track & Field, Swim Team, Basketball, and Tae Kwon Do. |
Leila’s chosen sport became track & field. While Montana was one of the first states to open up vaulting to women in 1993, it was not until the following year (as an eighth grader on the Junior High track team) that her coach let her try vaulting. Leila had been watching the boys in the team and decided that she would like to try vaulting. However, when she approached the head coach at that time, he stated it wasn’t possible for her to try because girls were too weak for this event. The following year, the junior high team started losing the dual meets by a few points because they would stack up their girls in the vault. At one of the meets (where they were losing), her coaches asked if she was still interested in trying pole-vaulting. Leila, of course, said yes! They handed her a pole, and she won her first meet at 6 feet. Leila has been hooked ever since. Oh, the head coach who said girls were too weak? Well, he quickly changed his tune and became one of the biggest supporters of what is now a large vaulting program at Sidney High School. Leila was fortunate to have a great high school vault coach, Steve Yockim. She was even also able to compete in other events (100m, long jump, 4x100, 200m) throughout high school.
Leila continued her passion through her college years at Stanford University. While pursuing her degrees (Major in Human Biology, Minor in Archaeology, Pre-med; Master in Medical Anthropology), she was in the Stanford University Track Team as a pole-vaulter (with Miche being one of her Stanford coaches at the time).
Leila’s schedule has not changed a bit; her days are still packed: she still trains and competes (with VasbySF), she is a Course Assistant in the Human Biology Program at Stanford University, she is in the “Cuddler Program” at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, she is learning Spanish, she goes to kickboxing classes, loves to squeeze in reading time, and travels quite a bit.
When asked why she is with VasbySF Track Club: “I am thrilled to be a part of VasbySF with its tailored training programs, great coaching, fun athletes to train with, and an energetic and supportive environment.”
VasbySF is very proud of Leila. She has been an inspiration to everyone in the Club not just because of her long list of achievements, but because of her very positive attitude, strong work-ethic, and appreciation of life.
Athletic achievements as a pole-vaulter:
- Sidney High School record holder
- Nike 1999’s Top Prep Marks
- All-state selection from Montana all four years of high school
- The Montana "A" state pole vault champion and record holder from 1998-00 (finished second in 1997)
- 1999 African junior record holder
- USATF Junior Olympic champion and record holder in 1999
- An All-American throughout high school
- Pac-10 Women's Track & Field All-Academic
- Pac-10 Qualifier 2001-2004, Regional Qualifier
- Pac-10 Scorer, Regional Scorer
Exercise: Your Life Depends On It - Words From Dr. Gregory Dabb

Much of what we think and do in this life can be spun as positive or negative. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be said favorably about being overweight. If there are serious risks to being overweight, then there are definitely serious benefits to being at an ideal weight. As creatures with the ability to make choices, you can decide which sounds better for you.
The body must create roughly one mile of arteries and capillaries to send blood to every pound of fat. Your heart has to pump blood ten extra miles EVERY BEAT if you are ten pounds overweight. The heart is a muscle and gets bigger (even enlarged) when it works more than it should. To me, it definitely hits home to think of it this way... "If I lose only one pound of fat, my heart will have a whole mile of pressure off of it." Try it next time you work out (or thinking twice about whether you should get off the couch and work out).

The New England Journal of Medicine reports that our young Americans will be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents because obesity will shave years off of their lives. Experts believe obese individuals may die 12 to 13 years prematurely. By the way, 67% of Americans are overweight and one in three are obese. Unfortunately, these numbers are expected to rise. So in thinking of the positive spin... you will live longer if you are NOT obese. Super positive spin...you can do more things that truly make you happy...for longer!!!
The Center for Disease Control announced that poor diet and lack of exercise resulted in 400,000 deaths in 2000 alone. They are about to overtake smoking as the No. 1 preventable death in the U.S. Who would think that obesity would kill more people than inhaling poison everyday? On a positive note, one study proved that exercise is better than angioplasty (the "roto-rooter" for your heart's arteries) in reducing cardiovascular events including heart attacks, strokes and hospitalization for angina (chest pain).
May you make the right decisions for your health before a crisis hits. May you also exercise for the love of life rather than the fear of disease. Keeping a positive mental attitude is a major factor in optimum health.
All the best in health and happiness,
Dr. Dabb
